1st of August celebrations in Switzerland

Every year on the 31st of July Switzerland is gathering on the streets of their cities to celebrate their national holiday. This includes a big firework, concerts of alphorns and a national feast on the streets. People from the villages come to the cities to join the crowds on the streets celebrating.
Last year we had temperatures of 12°C and I am really happy that this year the summer arrived last week. We won’t have to wear pullovers and jackets tonight to celebrate with the Swiss. (more…)

Fleamarket Basel on Saturdays

Saturdays are great to visit the fleamarket Basel at the Petersplatz. It is the perfect opportunity to go vintage hunting, chat with the people on the market and spend a good Saturday morning. If you come from the market in the center you will have to climb the stairs to arrive Petersplatz, which lies just behind Spalenberg. From the direction of the hospital you will have to turn left at Bernoullianum.

You can find a wide range of cool stuff from old silver ware to African figures there is wide range of treasure waiting for you. My favorite finds are vintage leather handbags and cool watches. Once I bought an entire set of silver forks and spoons which I am using every day now and wouldn’t replace for stainless steel anymore. The prices here at the fleamarket Basel are pretty nice compared to the normal price level in Switzerland.

I mentioned before that I bought an Acne dress because I wanted to have a piece from this brand. I was not really convinced and went back to the shop to return it. What I got was not my money back but I found two thsirts from The Hip Tee which really seemed to be special. (more…)

Back in Basel

I arrived today in Basel, where summer is in full swing. Temperatures hit 31°C and there were no clouds on the sky. In these conditions the people in Basel normally gather around the recently renovated Rhine promenade to BBQ, swim, or just chill.

Last year when I came back to the south of Germany for summer holidays, escaping the Spanish heat in Madrid, one of the first things my mother told me was “Amy is dead”. Amy as if she was one of our friends. For my mother she was the voice, the best voice that ever existed, and my parents are fans of Maria Callas. For me, I would say, listening to her songs never tires me, they are smart, fun and I always wonder how perfectly they sound. One year today after her dead and there is (and never will) be a replacement for the genius of Amy, she who made the music world hope again.
