A Year of Style – Shining like a Star

With going out in the evening comes the stress of what to put on, how to match everything perfectly, how to make our hair, which shoes would be best and especially not to get stressed and enjoy ourselves.

As Frédéric Fekkai is the stylist of stars and many of his clients walk down the red carpet in Hollywood, he is an expert in making them look fabulous without overdoing it. His tips for Hollywood glamour maybe applied for every evening event as one of his tips is “less is more”. Just perfect for many who want to comfortable in their clothes but also look great!

1) To start a great evening it is good to be mentally relaxed as well as physically. Before stressing yourself about all you want to do and prepare why not do something for yourself first. Frédéric Fekkai recommends a massage, sea-salt scrub, a manicure and a pedicure. As this is quite an elaborate program, my personal favourite is a face-mask and a bath or shower. Some good smelling body lotion or oils make you feel gorgeous immediatly and bring the right mood to start the evening.

Feeling relaxed and confident is about the most efficient thing you can do to look like a million dollars, and in LA bare skin is the most essential accessory there is for a nighttime look.                                                               Frédéric Fekkai – A Year of Style

This year Oscars passed by me very fast. After some much attention we now give to the fashion shows and it’s circus on the streets, the style of the stars in Hollywood lost it’s importance for me. Nevertheless I couldn’t ignore the looks shown on the websites of the big fashion magazines. I have seen many white dresses and designer clothes but the look that seemed to be for day on the front page, was Angelina Jolie in a black dress, showing her bare leg and full red lips to the cameras. Seems that the bare skin beats the elaborate designer dresses and fixed coiffures of others.

2) Hair style can be frustrating and steal a lot of your time dressing up. As if you are not stressed enough already, your hair never  does what you want it to do the moment before you want to leave the house. I like playing with my hair once in a while to see what kind of looks I can achieve with my cut. Normally I avoid doing this before I go to a party. When I have found a style I like, I try to make it look perfect so that when I want to go to a party I can redo it without to much stress. The important thing is not to worry too much about it. A Year of Style: Casual Chic

As this month is about clarifying, our wardrobe should host some looks that represent this word. To clarify your look means to select basic pieces you can put together everyday which are effortlessly chic.

Some examples I like to put together into a look that is casual chic:

  • black woolen pants with a silk shirt and flats
  • grey jeans with a yellow pullover, or any other color that matches, with ballerinas, Oxfords or sandals in summer
  • any simple jeans with a long-sleeved shirt and flat shoes
  • a straight cut long or short linen or cotton skirt with a top in a matching color
  • a white shirt and black pants always work

So why should we seek casual chic for our daily wardrobe?

As I like reading books about fashion written by people with a certain degree of insight, I will cite some of them:

The essence of casual refinement, chic is a little less studied than elegance and a little more intellectual. … “the aristocracy of external appearance”.                                                                                                                                                                               Genevieve Antoine Dariaux – A guide to elegance

To me, the most glamorous women are those who wear their finery with the same casual chic they radiate in a pair of jeans. It’s a matter of having confidence in yourself, your look, your style as you have defined it.                                    Frédérik Fekkai – A Year of Style

A Year of Style: Sunglasses

Sunglasses are instant chic. They convey attitude and confidence, sophistication and style. They should never look weak, timid or ordinary.                               Frédéric Fekkai – A Year of Style

Since Audrey Hepburn wore them in Breakfast at Tiffany's, big sunglasses have become irresistable! via hecklerspray.com

According to Frédéric Fekkai there are a couple of things to keep in mind when choosing your sunglasses:

  • take time choosing them to pick the right pair, they will last longer
  • remember that great sunglasses are a part of your look
  • too much gold ornamentation, even though the logo is good, make sunglasses look cheap
  • black frames work on almost every skin tone
  • the most important aspect is the quality of the lens, it protects your eyes and reduces the wrinkles you would get without sunglasses
  • wrap-around sunglasses might make you feel like a movie star, but they will look terribly aloof

This year I bought me a new pair of sunglasses at Lotta Vintage. They have a high UV-protection and frames of leopard patterns. They look exactly like those in “A Year of Style” but I choose them because I have seen many street style photographs with women wearing this kind of glasses. They are vintage and didn’t cost me much. My opinion is that you should choose good quality but also have more than one pair of glasses. Depending on your mood or your outfit. Sometime it is nice to have classic and chic glasses but other days you want something fun and more fashionable.

Lotta Vintage in Madrid offers a wide selection of sunglasses for every face type!

Recently I ran into an optician in Malasaña who has some pretty and stylish sunglasses in his window. If you don’t want to go for the big names like Ray Ban, D&G and Co. this might be an option. Good quality and style @ Optica Caribou, C/Espiritu Santo 14

A big selection of prices and brands can be found at Corté Ingles, Paseo de la Castellana. I went there with to look for Ray Ban sunglasses and they had every existing model as well as a catalog to find even more and staff speaking English. If you are looking for a well-known brand, this is the store to go to.

A year of Style – Organizing your Wardrobe

Everybody has lived through the situation of standing in front of your wardrobe not knowing what to wear, deciding that there is nothing to put on at all and heading out for shopping. The next time you want to get dressed the scenario repeats itself. Our wardrobes are an important furniture in our lives. Their state of order define the way we get out of the house in the morning and if we are frustrated getting dressed or enjoy these routine every morning.

Inside my semi-organized closet

Having an organized wardrobe makes your life easier every day. It even has become a buisness to organize the wardrobes of people who have a lot of clothes and accessoire but no time or skill to do it themselves. Practical Princess is a  business in England, where hard-working ladies visit your home while you are at work or somewhere else. You arrive back to a house with order you hardly recognize anymore. What you recognize is your clothes hanging like little soldiers in your wardrobe, waiting to make you happy when you choose what to put on the next morning. No space that is untidy and you will feel relieved and as if some kilos of chaos have left your life.
