There is something magical and breathtaking about grand buildings, especially when they appear in rather remote areas. My favorite spot for visiting are the castles build into the mountains in Petra, Jordan. Until then I will enjoy the view of El Escorial.

Dear Dr. Jones – El Escorial #2

From the train station El Escorial there are two ways to get to the monastry, first take the bus and second take a walk. The walk passes through a large park, and the “Casita del Principe”, the small house of the Prince. It goes bit by bit up the hill and through some desert like landscape in summer, but quite photogenic. It is a 15 minutes walk and I believe much nicer and more quiet than the bus ride. I felt pretty alone there and after Madrid it was a nice break.

If you asked me about 13 years ago (actually they did) what I wanted to become when I grow up, it would be an archeologist. I think because I watched Indiana Jones movies, played Tomb Raider until I got all the bonus artifacts and read the National Geographic Magazine mostly because of the new discoveries on ancient cultures.
